Special Photo / Six students at Riverwood International Charter School in Sandy Springs recently traveled to Norway for the fifth annual Entrepreneur Innovation Summit to collaborate with other international students on projects they could continue through the year in their home countries. The summit began in 2008 as a partnership between Denmark, Norway and the U.S. with goal of teaching students from different countries to work with entrepreneurship on an international level. Founded by Riverwood IB business teacher Sheri Smith and Einvind Husabo of Norway’s Junior Achievement, the camp initially was sponsored by Georgia Real Enterprises. Riverwood students have participated in all five summits and have hosted two of them. As part of the Riverwood Flying Club, they had been learning all year but had never been at the helm. The eight-member group is run by and was founded by Sohmer, also a longtime pilot and certified flight instructor.

Special / Anne Boatwright / Katie Arney and Jodi Jackson, co-chairs of Riverwood International Charter School’s Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA) recently presented mini-grants to two teachers in response to their applications outlining their special programs and initiatives. The PTSA awarded grants of $12,000 in math and science and used $10,500 across the curriculum. International Baccalaureate business teacher Sheri Smith received $1,300 to sponsor Riverwood’s recent inaugural Career Fair. Science teacher Rama Balachandran received $1,100 for participation of the Riverwood Robotics Club in the First Tech Challenge competition in September. Special Photo / Riverwood International Charter School sophomore Brentson Buckner recently placed second for his entry at the state level in the Georgia Educational Technology Fair at Middle Georgia State College in Macon. Representing Fulton County, Buckner won for his video and photography of chemistry experiments and events in the honors chemistry program in the multimedia applications category. Last fall Buckner was tasked by his honors chemistry teacher, Lakshmi Anumukonda, with producing a video demonstrating National Chemistry Week activities at the school. Impressed with the result, Riverwood’s broadcast video production teacher, Jesse Futrell, encouraged Buckner to enter the video into the Fulton County Technology Fair, where he won in the multimedia applications category.

Special Photo / Pace Academy in Buckhead recently broke ground on The Arthur M. Blank Family Upper School, a 75,000-square-foot facility that will replace the current upper school, constructed in 1961. The groundbreaking is a significant milestone in the school’s Aim High campaign, which surpassed its $32 million goal in April. The family of Atlanta Falcons owner and Chairman Arthur M. Blank contributed Aim High’s lead gift. Designed by Pace alumnus Sandy Cooper of Collins Cooper Carusi Architects, the new upper school will nearly double the space of the current one and will include The Woodruff Library, a gift of Jane Woodruff and Buck and Ann Woodruff, as well as a 1,500-square-foot student commons, a college counseling suite, an academic resource center featuring private tutoring rooms and a learning lab, and state-of-the-art classrooms and science labs. Special Photo / To celebrate Dining Out, its annual fundraiser, the March of Dimes recently hosted a patron party at the Buckhead home of Crissy and Chris Klaus. The event brought together all those who had purchased tables for Dining Out, in which residents could eat a special four-course dinner with wine pairings at a local restaurant, with a portion of the bill going to the March of Dimes. Dining Out’s honorary chef, Carvel Grant Gould of Canoe in Vinings, helped lead the cooking efforts and put together dishes for the guests to sample in anticipation of the main event. WiredCats fourth at robotics competition

Led by senior captains Zachary Butner for the build team and senior Emily Chu for the business team and build team assistant captain and junior Josh Wang, the WiredCats (Team No. 2415) recently finished qualifying in fourth place in a pool of 60 teams at the 2013 FIRST Peachtree Regional Robotics Competition at the Gwinnett Civic Center. In the last match, the WiredCats had a perfect score of everything they shot. They were chosen by the third-place team for their alliance and competed in quarterfinals. In the highest-scoring match of the entire regional, they lost 136-142 to the alliance that won the competition. The WiredCats were also awarded the Engineering Inspiration Award, which recognizes a team’s outstanding efforts in advancing respect and appreciation for engineering and engineers, both within their school and their community. The judges cited their training modules and mentoring program. The award includes a place in the championships in St. Louis and a $5,000 grant to cover registration fee.
