Jobs, post-secondary education, the waiting list (for waivers) and reducing the state’s burden of proof for defendants with intellectual disabilities in death penalty cases recently were among the topics at the Georgia Council on Developmental Disabilities’ 15th annual Disability Day at the Georgia State Capitol in downtown Atlanta. There were 2,500 who preregistered for the rally and thousands of advocates, family members and supporters of people with disabilities gathered at the event. Gov. Nathan Deal pledged his continued support to people with developmental disabilities. With one of every five Georgians having some type of disability, everyone is connected to disabilities in some way. Pictured are some of the more than 2,500 advocates for those with disabilities who attended Disability Day at the Capitol.

Laureate Medical Group’s Cheryl Orlansky recently was awarded Outstanding Dietitian of the Year by the Georgia Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics at its annual conference of the Georgia Academy, held in Atlanta. “This is such an honor for me, and a highlight of my professional career,” Orlansky said. Laureate has four locations: Alpharetta, Jonesboro, Midtown and Sandy Springs. In addition to her certification as a registered dietitian, Orlansky holds credentials as a licensed dietitian and a certified diabetes educator and has earned a certificate in weight management from the Commission on Dietetic Registration. March was National Nutrition Month.

Buckhead author Maxine Rock recently gave a presentation titled the ‘Birth of a Book,’ at BookLogix in Alpharetta during the unveiling of her new book, ‘Adventures in Faun Forrest.’ She wrote it with the help of her granddaughters, Julia Rock Schiffer, 9, and Rachel Rock Schiffer, 12, who edited and illustrated it, respectively. Julia also wrote poetry for the book. The presentation showed participants how a book is made from start to finish including the editing, graphic designs and how it comes off the press.
