Henry County Senior Services’ will host its annual ‘Miles for Meals’ walk May 4 at the Jason T. Harper Event Center, 101 Lake Dow Road in McDonough.

The walk, which begins at 10 a.m., is the department’s only fundraiser for homebound seniors in the Henry County community.

It is a two-mile walk through scenic Heritage Park, which is suitable for the fitness level of everyone.

Registration begins on race day at 9 a.m.

All walkers will receive a T-shirt and meal ticket with their suggested $25 donation when they register.

Rita Green, event and volunteer coordinator for the walk, said the walk has been a longstanding, meaningful tradition in the community.

“It started in 1994,” she said. “It’s always held the first Saturday in May because May is Older Americans Month. It was developed by the Henry County Council on Aging as a fundraiser to subsidize and sponsor programs and services for the county’s senior adults.”

Green said the event draws about 200 walkers each year, although more walkers and sponsorship have recently been hard to come by.

“With the economy, it’s been hard getting more walkers out to walk,” she said. “We have 40-something sponsors and we still have the same sponsors. They have had to go down a little level.”

The belief in the effort and cause is what has kept the sponsors and walkers coming back each year, said Green.

“A lot of the walkers have been walking since day one,” she said. “They come and are there because they want to support it. It’s all about family.”

Green is committed to making this year’s event, like all the others, a great success.

“What I do is try every means available to let the community know that senior services is here to help promote the programs and things we do, as far as meals on wheels and home service,” she said. “We are here and doing the best to help our homebound seniors that need an extra hand.”
