Linda Cannon, Austin’s Los Angeles-based business partner and head of his movie and television development company, confirmed Austin’s interest in developing Atlanta’s longest running comedy, currently showing at the Ansley Park Playhouse in Atlanta, into a television series.
“I haven’t seen anything this original and funny come out of Hollywood in a long time” Cannon said in a statement. “Peachtree Battle’s” multi-layered story lines, loveable, eccentric characters combined with masterful writing has hit series written all over it.”
The usually vocal “Peachtree Battle” creator and playwright, John Gibson, has been unusually tight-lipped about the deal, but did confirm that Justin Miles, star of the ABC series “The Gates” and HBO’s “East Bound & Down,” will be joining the cast of “Peachtree Battle” for a limited engagement. Miles will play the role of Ansley Habersham, an Atlantan socialite’s favorite son, who gets engaged to a Hooter’s girl.
Gibson would not confirm if Miles is being considered for the television role, but said, “Justin would be great in any series. We are excited to welcome him to the cast!”
Miles added, “It’s an honor to be part of a project at the beginning.”
Sources close to the project confirm that over the past few months, production crews have been filming test scenes at the Bell Estate in Buckhead and the Hunter Mansion on Peachtree Battle, demonstrating Austin’s commitment to the project. Also, Gibson has indefinitely postponed the opening of his summer comedy, “The Limousine Ride” and will add another performance of “Peachtree Battle” to concentrate solely on the project.
“We’ll be trying some new angles on the story, so it should be a lot of fun for the audience.” he said.
But “Peachtree Battle” may not be Gibson’s only comedy coming to the small screen.
“We are also negotiating several of Gibson’s other comedies,” Cannon said. “TeaPARTY, [which] closed this past winter after a year and a half run and his new comedy, scheduled to open this fall, ‘My Big Fat Peachtree Battle Divorce.’”
“Peachtree Battle” is Atlanta’s longest running theatrical production, surpassing the record previously held by “Driving Miss Daisy.” It opened in September 2001 and is currently enjoying its 11th season. It is now held over through the Labor Day. The Ansley Park Playhouse is located at 1545 Peachtree St., Suite 102.
