Summer entertainment will be that much sweeter due Union City’s upcoming Sizzling Concert Series.

The concert series will feature two free shows, one on July 3 featuring jazz musicians Norman Brown and Gerald Albright and a second on Sept. 2 featuring Keith Sweat.

Gates will open at 6 p.m. on both evenings with show time following at 8 p.m.

Both concerts will be at Union Station Mall at 1000 Shannon Mall.

“Basically what [Union City personnel] did was try to promote some events and concerts not only for tourism but to increase community involvement and to give back to the community,” said Lauren Alexander, marketing and events coordinator.

Alexander said the series has taken place in the city for the past three years.

In order to make both concerts a reality, a sound, light and production company was hired by the city.

The company formed a committee of people to help execute all of the work and also booked the acts performing.

Where the concerts take place is where the art of transformation, however, sets in.

In the area formerly known as Shannon Mall, which has remained deserted since its closing in 2010, a full-size stage along with several hundred chairs.

“It’s kind of set up like Chastain Park Amphitheatre,” said Alexander. “Residents can bring their own lawn chairs and pinic baksets.”

The only difference, Alex-ander noted, is that three are no tickets and no admission fee. Both shows are free to the public.

The show will kick off at 8 p.m., with an opening act before the main act hits the stage.
