As the season everyone waits for kicks off Aug. 24, there will be five new head coaches in the DeKalb Neighbor coverage area and new region alignments for all.
It does not feel like we are far removed from the Tucker Tigers leaving the Georgia Dome as Class AAAA state champions. But it is almost time to start the new season.
As the Tigers and all the rest of the teams in the Neighbor coverage area get ready for the 2012 season, we bring you this year’s preview section.
There is no big news on the professional football scene this year, but the shuffling of the college football scene will be on display this year.
The Georgia High School Association took a page from the NCAA’s book and shook things up within its classifications.
This year there will be six classifications instead of five and many of the teams in DeKalb County are in different regions and all will face different region foes this season.
This issue is filled with the breakdown of all the regions involving Neighbor coverage area teams, the DeKalb Neighbor Super Seven and two feature stories about what has changed in DeKalb County.
These changes were not limited to in which region the teams are competing. There will be five teams in the coverage area that will enter the season with a brand-new head coach.
The theme for this preview section is “New Faces and New Places” to signify all the changes made in the Neighbor coverage area.
We will dive into the minds of Tucker’s Bryan Lamar, Decatur’s Brad Waggoner, Chamblee’s Allen Johnson, Redan’s Willie Griffieth and Lakeside’s Mike Rozier to see how each coach approaches his team in the first year.
We will also check in with some of the area coaches regarding how reclassification has changed the landscape of football in DeKalb County.
Tucker, Lakeside and Stone Mountain kick off the season in the first week on Aug. 24. Stephenson gets the early highlight in week two, as it will play in the National High School Gridiron Challenge at North Gwinnett High School against Pine Forest from Pensacola, Fla., Sept. 1
The season offers many intriguing matchups, but that is no surprise for football season in DeKalb County.
