To some, sports are our escape — our collective get-away from the harsh (ex: the Newtown tragedy) or mundane (different week, same script) realities of life.

For others, their favorite sport — from boxing to bowling — is actually a metaphor for life. We do our best and see what happens … whether knocking out our challenger when all seems lost, picking up that hard-to-earn spare or learning to trust our teammates (Read: co-workers, partners, friends.)

Virtually all sports pique my interest in some way or another. Above all else, I like to study the athletes and coaches involved. The past year never failed to deliver enough opportunities to do just that.

I look for 2013 to leave an even bigger impression.

Reason # 1: In the local prep sports world, business is about to pick up.

Be prepared to see one of the more competitive seasons in high school basketball in years. DeKalb boasts a number of championship contending teams … usual suspects like Tucker and Marist, as well as defending champs Columbia and Miller Grove [both who regrettably don’t fall under our coverage net].

Wrestling, perhaps the most authentic gladiatorial sport outside of boxing and MMA, is also here. It’s one of those niche sports — either you like it or you don’t — that definitely worth your time if you’re willing to be patient enough to get into it … and, of course, learn to live without a scoreboard, cheerleaders and instant replay for the duration of the match.

Don’t look now, but the spring sports (all 80 of them) are around the corner.

Baseball, soccer, track and field and lacrosse are pastimes some of our DeKalb student-athletes will ultimately parlay into professional careers. If there ever was a time to catch a rising star, 2013 should be it.

But, of course, football is king in these parts. College bowl season and the NFL playoffs are usually enough to tide us over until September … well, March is probably more like it.

There’s nothing quite like a fan’s (or fan base’s) annual off- and pre-season anticipation/expectations regimen. “This will be our year” is probably the most beautiful statement in all of sports. It’s why we keep tuning in, right?

So, keep an eye out for 2013 … it just might be your year.
