The 5K Run for Kenya, which will be a fun run for all ages April 5 at Yellow River Park in Stone Mountain, will benefit about 40 orphans at the Mwangaza Children’s Home Foundation.
The three-mile long trail will wind through the park and include paved as well as soft terrain and scenic views of the woods and river.
Participants are welcome to bring children or pets and kids 5 years old and younger may join for free.
Runners will receive a T-shirt and snacks the day of the race.
“Our slogan for the run is ‘one run supports an orphan for one month,” said Kalyn Conner, who helped organize the event.
The $25 online pre-registration fee or $30 day of registration fee will support housing, education, clothing and feeding of one orphan living in rural Kenya.
The nonprofit started in 2007 after a Kenyan-American member of the organization’s church told the congregation about the statistics of orphaned children in his country.
“The orphanage started when the community began bringing children to the widowed wife of a Lutheran pastor and once she took in her first child word spread, and one became five, five became 40 and eventually Mwangaza was born out of the need to support this small orphanage,” said Matt Schafer, co-founder of the nonprofit and co-organizer of the race.
Now, he said, the organization needs funds to help the older children go to high school because free education does not exist in Kenya.
Those who do not want to run but would still like to make a contribution to the nonprofit can register as phantom runners.
Every donation goes a long way to help care for and educate orphans, Schafer said.
“All of the money raised will go directly to the children,” he said. “We’re a small organization and with many 5K races around town, participants may be one of thousands of people helping, but with our event, runners are one of hundreds, so the money goes farther and has bigger, direct impact.”
