AL FRESCO: Food trucks event brings music, meals to Dunwoody

Dunwoody Food Truck Thursdays have proven to be more successful than expected, as the first week drew in about 1,000 guests.

In its premier year, the event has approval for 12 weeks to determine the success and whether it is something Dunwoody would like to continue, said organizer Bettie Cagle of Redbird Events.

Redbird, the city of Dunwoody and Dunwoody Homeowners Association partnered to gain the initial 12-week approval, Cagle said.

The first event included five food trucks and King of Pops, and the second had seven trucks and King of Pops. The trucks will be different each week.

“We’re trying to add enough trucks for the appropriate crowd,” Cagle said.

The event includes live bands as well. All the bands are local and will rotate each week. They play for free, with dinner and drinks provided.

“It’s an opportunity for the bands to get out there and get good exposure,” Cagle said.

What Cagle likes most about the event is the community bonding, which happens in lines or on the grounds in the picnic-style outdoor concert.

“People bring their chairs, coolers and blankets and meet each other,” she said.

There is also a playground and inflatables for kids, and the Atlanta Braves’ bat team gives out stickers, schedules and has games for kids to win hits by playing T-ball.

The pilot event drew a larger crowd than expected, she said, crediting some of its success to the last day of school.

Dunwoody residents Greg Gordon, Paul McKeon and Jack Gerblick own and operate food trucks Hail Caesar and Pressed for Time, and Gordon also expressed his joy in seeing a large crowd.

“The opening night went great,” he said. “We’ve been working on this for two years and we couldn’t be happier.”

Gordon’s’ trucks offer salads, wraps and subs with Caesar dressing on Hail Caesar, and flavored Paninis on Pressed for Time. The favorite is a blackened chicken raspberry Panini, he said.

The goal, Gordon said, is to create an event for people in the suburbs to feel like they are in town with the trendy trucks.

“Its run just the same as the way a big city food truck event would, but in Dunwoody you have people meeting their neighbors and reconnecting with people they know,” Gordon said. “It’s like having a food court outside.”

Cagle said residents and the city council have offered to volunteer and support the trucks, which shows they are happy to have the event in Dunwoody.
