The Cass track team has gotten off to a slow start due to the weather, but they are still working hard.

One notable athlete on the team, according to head coach Terry Gough, is Amber Bowen.

Bowen is a senior at Cass and mainly competes in the hurdles and the triple jump for the team.

Currently in her second season with the team, Gough said Bowen came to the team with good training and knowledge already in hand.

“Amber came to us with having had great coaching… She’s progressed while she’s been here but since she was coached and taught so well, her improvements have been in small increments. However, they’ve been steady,” said Gough.

Bowen is described by Gough as being a “competitive, athletic, and confident” person. As a teammate, Gough said Bowen is helpful with the younger team members and at times gets frustrated with others when they fail to exhibit the same competitive attitude that she has.

Bowen’s best time in the 100 hurdles is 16.48 which she achieved at the Region 7-AAAA Championship last season, placing second.

While she was not able to make that time in their only full meet of this season, on March 7 against River Ridge and Gilmer County, Gough said “it was a very cold and windy night” and he expects her times to fall “pretty quickly” as the temperature rises.

Even though she was not at her best, Bowen finished with two first place wins in the hurdles and a second place win in the triple jump.
