At 182 pounds, senior Deandre Sims is described by head coach Sean Moistner as a guy who “does it right.”
On Nov. 30 and Dec 1. the team went to South Carolina to participate in the Southern Slam, where Sims finished second in his weight class.
On Dec. 5, Sims won his weight class as he defeated a wrestler from Carrollton, 18-3.
Last season Sims finished in third place at state and currently holds two school wrestling records — most wins in a season, 60, and most escapes in a season, 72.
Sims began wrestling as a freshman for Alexander and Moistner has seen him progress as a wrestler through the years.
“His hard work has paid off by staying on the mat and staying active. He works hard physically and has turned himself into a good wrestler and a good person,” said Moistner.
Sims is one of the captains this year and is a “great role model” for his teammates.
“He does it right everywhere, on the mat, in class, in the hallways. He has a 3.5 GPA and he’s always positive,” Moistner said.
As a senior, Moistner said Sims is interested in wrestling at the next level and will have a decision to make very soon about where he will take his talent.
“He has received quite a bit of interest since the Southern Slam. He’ll be going over them all and making a decision over the Christmas break,” said Moistner.
