The Alexander Cougars got their first win against Columbus Nov. 2.

Head coach Matthew Combs said it was a full team effort, but one player kept the flow of the game going — Evan Wood.

This senior quarterback helped lead his team to victory. Wood rushed for 98 yards and two touchdowns, as well as throwing a touchdown pass in the second quarter.

Wood has played for the Cougars since his freshman year and began on varsity as a sophomore.

According to Combs, since Wood’s first year, he has changed in size and leadership role.

“He’s gotten a lot stronger and faster. He went from looking like an ‘average Joe’ kid to a real athlete through all the workouts,” said Combs. “He was really quiet as a freshman and he still is but he’s more of a leader. He’s not a very vocal player but he leads by showing you how it’s done and through his attitude.”

In the final game of Alexander’s season against Fayette County Friday, the Cougars won 49-46 and Wood contributed to this victory several ways.

Wood finished the night with 198 rushing yards, four rushing touchdowns, 110 passing yards and one touchdown pass. He also played on both sides of the ball throughout the entire game and was a part of “numerous pass break-up plays.” With Wood’s high school football career over, he is interested in playing at the college level. While he is looking to play football, Combs said academics comes first with Wood as he is a 4.0 student.
