The Douglas County High School Tigers upset the Chapel Hill Panthers, 46-7 Aug. 31.

This win was a shock to many as the Panthers had put on two good showings this season, a scrimmage against Alexander and their season opener against Osborne.

According to the Tigers’ head football coach, Jason Respert, special teams was the key to the Tigers’ victory.

Making a large contribution to the win was kicker Juan Serna.

The junior helped his team without putting up the most points on the scoreboard, making the most tackles or rushing for the most yards.

Being a part of the special teams unit, Serna kept the opposing team from gaining any yards on kick returns.

“Six of his seven kickoffs were in the back of the end zone,” Respert said.

Along with halting the punt returns, which was essential against Chapel Hill because of its significant punt return yardage this season, Serna put up six extra points for his team, getting the ball effortlessly between the uprights, according to Respert.

Serna also successfully put up a 48-yard field goal, pulling the Tigers three points further from the Panthers and closer to a huge win.

“That field goal probably had about eight or 10 more yards on it. That’s impressive by anyone’s standards of high school kickers,” Respert said.
