The Cartersville Lady ’Canes were on a three-game win streak last week as they have been refining their skills since the beginning of the season.

A large part of the team’s streak and winning record thus far is Kaelyn Irby.

At 5-foot-6, Irby is a junior point guard and a three-year starter for Cartersville.

“She started as a freshman and is one of our two returning starters from last year. They are carrying the team experience wise,” said head coach Cindy Moore.

Irby is the leading scorer for the team as she averages 16 points a night. Irby also leads the team in assists, averaging six a night. She leads in steals with an average of four a night and is third in rebounds with five a night.

“She’s an athlete and can do anything. Everything goes through her and she often draws two defenders to her,” said Moore.

Irby recently reached her 1,000th point playing high school ball.

This season, Moore said Irby’s best game was against Rome when she finished the night with 23 points. Moore also noted the games against Coahulla Creek and Cedartown on Jan. 4 and 5 when Irby had 10 assists and eight steals.

Moore described Irby as a hard working player who her teammates look to for leadership.

“The team really enjoys playing with her. If you play hard, she’ll get you the ball. She’s one of those special players that make everyone else step it up,” Moore said.
