Alexander won their season opener 41-14 against Bremen, with junior tailback Mikell Lands-Davis at the top of the stat sheet.

Finishing the night with 321 rushing yards on 23 carries for four touchdowns, and three receptions for 15 yards, Lands-Davis had a huge impact on the Aug. 24 game and head coach Matt Combs was impressed.

“It was proudly one of the most impressive performances I have ever witnessed in high school football. I knew he had a good game, but did not realize he rushed for 321 yards until I saw the stat sheet after the game,” he said.

Combs described Lands-Davis as a “unique player,” “the whole package,” “big, athletic and fast” and having “great hands out of the back field.”

Not the most vocal player on the team, Lands-Davis allows his work ethic and actions to speak for him, with the offense set up around him but knowing there are other key players on the field as well.

“He realizes and understands that his performance was a direct reflection of what the other 10 players did on offense,” Combs said.

Combs attributes Lands-Davis’ performance to his improved conditioning and physicality after really getting into the weight program at Alexander, allowing him to keep his momentum throughout the game.

“Some of his biggest runs Saturday were in the third and fourth quarters. He really pulled away from the defensive players. Last year we would have not seen that,” said Combs.
