Head coach Jeremiah Fountain was able to send six wrestlers to the State Tournament in Macon this past weekend. There was one grappler Fountain felt deserved to be recognized for all of his hard work and achievement at sectionals and over the entire season.
As a junior, Quinzavious Sands wrestles in the 285-pound weight class.
“I chose Quinzavious because he is a great kid, a great leader and because this season he has had to battle. He has worked incredibly hard and has pushed through several obstacles this season,” said Fountain.
Wrestling for the Tigers since his freshman year, Sands just finished his third wrestling season.
This year he had a very good season as his record prior to the state tournament was 42-8.
“He finished first at the Crossbone Classic, first in Area, and third at the [Class] AAAAAA West sectional tournament,” Fountain said.
While he took first several times throughout the season, those tournaments, according to Fountain, were not his best performances.
“His best tournament this season by far was the AAAAAA West Sectional Tournament. It was loaded with tough competition and he had to really step up in order to finish as high as he did,” said Fountain.
