Head coach David Mills is proud of how his team came back after losing their first two games, but named senior Tashara Jones as the impact player for the team. Jones is a shooting guard, standing 5-foot-9 and leads the team in scoring as she averages 23 points per game.
Playing for the Lions as a freshman, junior and now a senior, Mills has noticed the growth in Jones over each season.
“Physically she has come a long way,” said Mills as he talks about her athleticism.
Mills said Jones averaged 9.9 points a game as a freshman and 18.8 as a junior.
Jones currently holds the school record for most points scored in a game with 42. Her best game thus far was against Rockmart where she scored 30 points. Just last week, Jones became a captain for the varsity Lions, a position Mills said he does not take lightly.
“Being a captain isn’t something that’s just given, it has to be earned. She worked very hard for that spot and I was proud to finally make her a captain,” said Mills.
According to Mills, Jones is very vocal and head strong. “She’s relentless on the court and she’s not happy just sitting and watching. She’s a strong willed kid,” Mills said.
Jones committed to Texas Southern University in November.
