Alexander takes home three championships

The Alexander wrestling team left the GHSA Traditional Wrestling State Tournament with three individual champions in Class 4A and finished in third place as a team.

Two other county schools competed as well.

After 13 grapplers qualified for the state tournament, head coach Sean Moistner had seven to finish in the top five of their weight classes.

Walking away with gold from Alexander were senior Trey Green at 106 pounds, senior Cody Starnes at 120 and senior Deandre Sims at 170.

The other top finishers were sophomore Roman Boylen in second at 126 pounds, junior Chris Achenbach in fifth at 132 pounds, senior Cody Dickerson in fourth at 152 pounds and senior Maverick Way in third at 285 pounds.

Other wrestlers which traveled to the state tournament with the team were Bryce Holloman at 113, Morgan Holloman at 138, Tony Johnson at 145, Spencer Gray at 182, Deon Evans at 195 and Cainan McKinney at 220.

As a whole the Cougars finished with 146.5 points, putting them in the third place spot behind Gilmer, 182.5, and Carrollton, 161.

Also from the Douglas County School System needing to be recognized for their performance at the state tournament was Douglas County High School in Class 6A.

The Tigers also had one wrestler to finish in the top six spots — Quinzavious Sands finished sixth in the heavyweight 285-pound weight class.

This season, Douglas County had six wrestlers qualify for the state tournament. The other five included Keywan Gaines at 113, Kalum Lo Vargus at 132, Soloman Greene at 138, Travis Beaird at 170 and Desmond Wareham at 195.

Douglas County finished the tournament with a combined score of 13, putting them in the 38th spot.

The last school to make a showing in the state tournament from the county was Chapel Hill

For Class 3A, the Panthers had one wrestler to place in the top six spots for a weight class — Khyree Walker in sixth at 220 pounds.

He actually placed 3rd. Two losses on the season went to the young men who place 1st and 2nd. He goes to Nationals in Virgina Beach April 4th thru 7th.
