The America Cancer Society announced that Summer Al-Majed has been named the Society’s Patient Resource Navigator at DeKalb Medical Center, effective Feb. 25. She previously served as the Society’s Patient Service Center Navigator in White Plains, New York.

Patient navigators are specially trained American Cancer Society staff members who work in hospitals to provide support and link cancer patients, survivors and caregivers to needed information and resources throughout the cancer journey. They offer high-quality and timely cancer-related information and are able to refer patients to American Cancer Society programs and services, link them with clinical trials, and provide assistance with such issues as available community resources, finances, housing and transportation. The American Cancer Society currently has eight Patient Resource Navigator programs in hospitals throughout Georgia.

“We are pleased to welcome Summer to the American Cancer Society’s Patient Resource Navigation program at DeKalb Medical,” says Kamilah Konrad, the society’s regional director for patient resource navigation.

“Summer has the experience needed to provide critical assistance to cancer patients and their families to help them cope with a diagnosis of cancer. She has also experienced cancer in her own family, so she knows first-hand the important role that services and support play in the journey through cancer and surviving the disease.”

Al-Majed received her master’s degree in social work with honors from Florida International University, and interned at Mount Sinai Comprehensive Cancer Center and the Phoenix Clinic Rehabilitation Center. Since 2010, she has worked as an ACS Patient Service Center Navigator in White Plains, New York, navigating patients in medical systems throughout New York and New Jersey. She has lived in Kuwait and London and speaks Arabic fluently.
