A third new artist, Anita Jordan, will open her studio in North Town Gallery, at 977 Main St. Jordan makes decorative and functional artworks from fused glass. There is still one vacancy at North Town Gallery, and efforts are underway to select another artist to join Jordan. The expanded Center Town Gallery, along with North Town Gallery and Kalonji’s Café at South Town Gallery make up SMart, Inc. East Town Gallery, operated by Susan Ryles, of Butterfly House Studio, was part of the program until Ryles’ graduation in July; her gallery remains open.
SMart, Inc. is funded by a grant from the Department of Housing and Urban Development. It is administered by ART Station Contemporary Arts Center through a contract with the city of Stone Mountain. The mission of the Stone Mountain Microenterprise Program is to plan for, build, develop, foster and nurture a creative economy in the city of Stone Mountain. The program, launched in October 2010 and is unique in the state of Georgia. The city has been recognized with several regional and statewide awards, and recently was named one of only two cities in Georgia to receive a prestigious Our Town Grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.
