Football coaches always say that the sport has three phases: offense, defense and special teams.

However, the latter one receives less attention than the other two but not at Douglas County, where the Tigers have used the services of senior punter Carlos Serna as one of their strongest weapons.

Serna has averaged more than 43 yards per punt this season, often placing the Tigers’ opponents in weak field position.

“Carlos has been the most steady and dependable player we’ve had all season.” head coach Jason Respert said.

“Our season has been going well,” Serna said. “The special teams unit has done a good job of accomplishing the goals we set at the start of the year. We’ve prepared well and worked hard on and off the field by going over videos.”

Serna has been the Tigers’ varsity kicker since freshman year.

The Tigers have won two games this year but still have an outside shot of making the postseason out of Region 3-AAAAAA. Serna knows the role that he and the unit must play for Douglas County to reach the playoffs.

“Special teams are very important because one missed punt or kickoff can hurt your teammates.”

Serna has also played for the school’s varsity soccer team since freshman year as a center midfielder and served as a captain the past three seasons. He also plays club soccer for SSA and is part of several youth organizations for his church. Serna hopes to continue playing soccer and football in college.
