Now that the sectionals from each classification in the state have narrowed down who are some of the best male track-and-field athletes in Georgia, it’s time to determine who the best of the best are in Jefferson at the Georgia Olympics this weekend.

On April 28 at the Class AAAA East Sectionals, the Creekside Seminoles were very impressive in events involving speed.

Evan Berry set a personal record in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.65 seconds for first place. He also set a personal record (21.46 seconds) in the 200 with a second-place finish.

The Seminoles’ 4-by-100 relay team will also be aiming for its second straight set of gold medals in Jefferson after posting the top finish in sectionals. Banneker’s relay team, which finished fifth at sectionals, will be competing for the upset.

In Class AAAAA, Westlake’s 4-by-100 relay team will try to improve on its sixth-place finish at sectionals while Langston Hughes hopes to finish better than eighth.

In the 4-by-400 relay, the Lions will attempt to trump their second-place finish in the preliminaries and the Panthers will try to finish better than seventh.

Also in the 4-by-400 relay but in Class AA, the Therrell Panthers will look to improve upon their third-place finish at sectionals. In Class AAA, Woodward’s relay team hopes to better its sixth-place finish in the preliminaries.

In the Class A hurdles, Landmark Christian’s Darius Smith aims for another first-place finish in the 300 hurdles just like at sectionals, and at least second place if not better in the 110 hurdles.

Over in Class AAAAA, Arius Gilstrap from Langston Hughes will aim to be a little faster in the 300 hurdles and trump his second-place finish in the preliminaries.

Still on the track but at a slower pace, Westlake’s Thomas Miller looks to hold on to the top spot in the 800-meter race and improve on his fourth-place finish in the 1600 at sectionals. Woodward’s Chris Burnett is hoping to finish better than third in the 1600 and fifth in the 800.

On the field, Tri-Cities junior Kenneth Fisher aims to finish first again in the Class AAAA long jump and better than third in the triple jump.

“In the triple jump, I need to work on my second phase because I’m not holding it long enough and it’s taking away from my jump,” Fisher said.
