Coming off the first playoff victory in school history, the Blessed Trinity Titans enter 2012 brimming with confidence and looking to take the next step towards being a football powerhouse.

“We feel like we have a chance to be a pretty good football team with eight guys back on each side of the ball and a good chance to build on all we accomplished last year,” said BT coach Tim McFarlin, who led the Titans to a sub-region championship and a 44-19 playoff win over Heard County last fall.

“Our goals this year are to try to win a region championship then make a run deep into the playoffs.”

A year ago Blessed Trinity came a game short of a region title, losing to Class AA powerhouse Buford 49-10 in the region title game. This fall the Titans will have the luxury of a Buford-less region 6AAA, but McFarlin is quick to point out that the new seven-team region will be far from a cakewalk.

“There is a lot more balance this year with four or five of those teams having a real chance to win it,” said McFarlin of the new region that includes Cedar Grove, St. Pius X, Woodward Academy, Decatur, Towers, and McNair.

“It’s a tough schedule from start to finish so we’ll have to come out of the gates playing well.”

On the field McFarlin will once again instill what he described as a boring approach to winning football games.

An experienced offensive line that includes four returning starters will pave the way for a run-heavy attack with occasional play-action passes.

On defense exotic blitzes and coverages will give way to a simple base package and an emphasis on fundamental football and solid tackling.

“It’s the same way I’ve coached my whole career. If we stay healthy, play with balance on offense and play tough defense we have a chance to be really good.”

Schedule:

8-24 Westminster

8-31 @Lovett

9-7 Hart County

9-21 @White County

9-28 @Woodward Acad.

10-12 Decatur

10-19 @Towers

10-26 McNair

11-2 @St. Pius X

11-9 Cedar Grove
