This morning I voted at High Point Elementary School in southern Sandy Springs. When I arrived at 7:22 a.m., there were four people voting ahead of me, but there were no lines to wait to fill out paperwork or get the card you use to vote. At one time there were seven voters there, including myself.

I’ve never had any problems voting at High Point or at nearby Greenfield Hebrew Academy, the old polling place, since moving from Buckhead to southern Sandy Springs in July 2007, after getting married. The poll manager, Nate Bednar, is always nice to me when I interview him about the election after voting. His staff of volunteers also is pleas-ant.

There usually is no line, which is good in that I can get in and out quickly, but on the flip side, it speaks to the voter apathy in metro Atlanta. I would like to see more people vote. On the U.S. Census Bureau’s website, it states Fulton County had an estimated 949,599 residents in 2011.

According to the Fulton County Elections Division website, there were 636,075 registered voters in the county as of June 4. But turnout in the last non-special election, was only 14.4 percent (March presidential primary). The last time it was close to half was in the November 2010 general election, when 49.9 percent of the county voted, partly due to the gubernatorial race.

The only time I remember there being long lines at High Point or Greenfield is during the 2008 presidential election. I’m sure this November’s election will be similar.
