At last week’s meeting the board heard from Chief Financial Officer Steve Barnette that his recommended millage rate is 18.909 mills — the same rate approved for the last five years.
Millage is a measurement used to help determine how much residents will pay in property taxes to fund the schools general fund budget, which is proposed at $206 million for the budget year beginning July 1.
Barnette said he was bringing the proposed millage rate number to the board so they would know it before he advertised it in the county legal organ.
The legal notice stated, “The Paulding County Board of Education does hereby announce that the millage rate will be established at a meeting to be held at the Paulding County Board of Education Board Room on July 23, 2013, at 8:30 a.m.”
It will also show the five-year digest, and what possible taxes the school district will levy.
“It is estimated the school district will bring in about $50 million,” Barnette said.
The board is scheduled to consider final adoption of only the budget Tuesday at 8:30 a.m.
In other action at last week’s meeting, officials told board members the district will be requiring concussion testing for all sports except swimming, tennis and golf.
This is a base line test so if a student suffers a head injury there will be data to allow system officials to know if there are symptoms of a concussion, said Don Breedlove, executive director for safety and athletics.
“It is $4 for base line and balance assessment,” he said. “There is no cost to parents.”
WellStar has donated $7,000, which is about 90 percent of the cost.
Superintendent Cliff Cole said, “I think we are probably ahead of the game as far as this process.”
Testing will be provided by the Sports Concussion Institute in July, October and January.
