Republican Loretta Lepore has thrown her hat into the 2014 race for the District 54 Georgia House of Representatives seat.

Lepore, a Buckhead resident, joins fellow Republicans Beth Beskin, John McCloskey and Angelic Moore in the campaign.

Incumbent Edward Lindsey, R-Atlanta, is vacating the post to run for the District 11 U.S. House seat next year. That position is currently held by Dr. Phil Gingrey, R-Marietta, who is running for retiring U.S. Sen. Saxby Chambliss’ post in 2014.

District 54 includes parts of Buckhead and Brookhaven. Lepore is a former journalist and CNN anchor who now owns Lepore Associates LLC, a communications firm. She announced her candidacy Tuesday in a letter emailed to her contacts.

“My career aspiration has not been to seek elected office,” Lepore wrote. “However, after much reflection, it’s clear that our community needs a representative who will effectively voice our concerns and expectations as issues are debated at the State Capitol.

“I am a mother, a business owner and a seasoned communicator. I will advocate for my children and our families. This is what I have always done. I will champion innovation and entrepreneurship. I see that this is where future jobs are. I will work with you and with colleagues to shape responsible public policy. This is what I have learned, having been active in the political process since the time I was able to vote.”

As of Sunday morning, Lepore did not return messages to her email address and cell phone seeking further comment.
