Canine Assistants, a Milton-based nonprofit which provides service dogs to children and adults with physical disabilities or special needs, is turning to community support to help raise $100,000.

Development director Tib Holland said one of the organization’s largest donors recently restructured its giving methods. The new deal will be beneficial to the nonprofit in the long run, he said, but created a financial need in the meantime.

“Our summer months … are our leanest months in terms of fundraising [and] we really needed a boost,” Holland said.

So the nonprofit launched its Change for Change campaign July 25, asking for $26 contributions from donors.

“It’s something they spend almost every day on little things, but $26 to us is tremendous in the terms of what we can do with it,” Holland said. “Twenty-six dollars from people in the community equals us being able to give more dogs to people on our waiting list and to provide for those dogs in terms of medical care and food and training costs.”

Canine Assistants recipients receive their dogs free of charge. It costs about $20,500 just to sponsor one dog, Holland said, as the organization covers training and the food and medical costs that occur throughout the entire life of the dog.

“We have over 2,000 people on our waiting list,” he said.

Right now, the need for financial aid is even stronger with as the facility is currently housing 60 puppies under the age of four months.

“I can’t ever remember having this many puppies at one time,” Holland said. “This campaign is going to help us sponsor those future service dogs that are just now being born and are starting their training.”

Donors can mail in contributions or give online to the nonprofit’s general donation fund or to its puppy adoption program. Those who designate their money to the puppy adoption program will get videos and training tips from nonprofit founder Jennifer Arnold emailed to them periodically.
