On the ballot voters were asked if the Constitution of Georgia should “be amended to allow state or local approval of public charter schools upon the request of local communities.”
The amendment calls for the creation of a state charter school commission. Once the polls closed at 7 p.m. numbers started to trickle in, and throughout the evening approval of the amendment outweighed the disapproving votes.
Voters approved the measure by 58.5 percent.
Voter turnout in Georgia was reported at 66.81 percent just before midnight, with 91.19 percent of counties reporting.
