The Paulding County Board of Commissioners voted unanimously for the budget last week.
“That is the first time in my career that I’ve passed a 5-0 budget,” said Commission Chairman David Austin.
Post 4 Commissioner David Barnett motioned for the vote.
“I think we are in great shape,” Barnett said.
The board also passed a millage rate of 8.22, rolled back from 8.29, after the tax digest, the value of all taxable property in Paulding, increased by 1.63 percent.
Both Austin and Barnett said they feel good not having to raise the millage rate, when some surrounding counties had to increase their taxes.
“Hopefully, we are on the way to recovery,” Austin said.
This budget is the same as the draft presented to commissioners July 23, said Finance Director Tabitha Pollard.
The overall budget includes a general fund and funds for fire services, E-911, special court, solid waste, special SPLOST and water.
The largest part is the general fund at $54.2 million. Within the general fund is the non-departmental category which has the largest increase at $1.52 million. Items in this category do not fall under just one department.
To pay for the items the county is using $1.92 million from its $25 million in reserves – though the money is only being used because of one-time capital purchases in the budget, Pollard said.
One of the capital purchases is computer equipment, which is the highest budgeted non-departmental project at $460,000.
Another category that saw an increase was the department of transportation at $591,390. Barnett said he would like to see the department be able to buy some new equipment for the aging fleet in the fiscal 2015 budget.
