As the season gives way to better weather, more offerings will appeal and reveal themselves to the sporting public.
From prep standard bearers to elders’ athletics, competitive fare abounds.
Here is sampling of what’s going on:
Not to be outdone, fans will be treated to one last 2012-13 hoops hurrah.
The 2013 DeKalb County Basketball All-Star Games are set for Thursday at Tucker High School.
The girls’ game is scheduled for a 5:30 p.m. tip-off.
Druid Hills coach Angela Nash’s squad will square off with Towers’ Johnny Toombs’ team.
Nash’s team is led by Class AAAA “Player of the Year” Miah Spencer of Columbia, Miller Grove’s Ashi Thompson and Klarissa Weaver
and Stone Mountain’s Danielle Clark.
Toombs’ squad will feature Stephenson’s Kaliyah Mitchell, Lithonia’s Raghe Brown, Arabia Mountain’s Brianna Missouri and Southwest DeKalb’s
The boys’ game will pit Druid Hills’ coach Jerome Lee’s squad against McNair’s Steve Clark’s team.
Columbia’s four-time All-State and classification “Player of the Year” Tahj Shamsid-Deen and Chamblee’s Jade McClendon lead Clark’s unit. Dunwoody’s Chris Lawrence and Kelvin Brown and Lakeside’s Malik Kemp will also suit up.
Lee’s unit features a pair of trios from Druid Hills — Clarence Williams, Deshon Burgess and Jacob King — and Tucker’s Davonte Fitzgerald, Jabria Craig and Tyler Burch, among other area standouts.
On the high school level, no less than seven sports are in play: soccer, baseball, tennis, golf, lacrosse, track and field, and gymnastics.
Perennial juggernauts like the St. Pius X soccer squad are worth the price of admission.
Registration for the 24th annual DeKalb County Senior Olympic Games — held May 6 through 17 — will continue until April 19.
The DeKalb County Department of Recreation, Parks & Cultural Affairs will host the Olympic-style sports festival, featuring adults ages 50 and older, at venues across DeKalb.
Participants will compete in a variety of sports, including: a women’s basketball clinic, free-throw basketball, bowling, golf, horseshoes, track and field, billiards, swimming, table tennis and water volleyball. Other activities include a line dancing competition, talent show, Wii bowling and health expo. Participants are encouraged to compete as a team or enter individual events for friendly competition.
