However, up to 20 families will be able to “rough it” by camping outdoors in a tent during the Douglas County Camporee and Flashlight Hike at Clinton Nature Preserve in west Douglas County this weekend.
Chad Griffin, community programs coodinator for Douglas County Parks and Recreation, said the event was embraced by the community in 2011 and included such activities as primitive cooking over an open fire.
“Some of [last year’s participants] had never camped before,” Griffin said.
Pre-registration is required for the camporee. Though campers must provide their own tents — no camping vehicles are allowed — the registration fee of $20 will include fishing, hiking and a scavenger hunt during the daytime; and night activities including games, a flashlight hike in the woods; and hot dogs, chili and cobbler cooked over an open fire.
Fishing equipment will be allowed, but dogs, alcoholic beverages, hunting equipment and off-road vehicles will not be allowed, Griffin said.
Cowboy poet Joel Hayes of Douglas County, who is also an outdoor cooking enthusiast, will prepare part of the meal, Griffin said.
Wal-Mart, Chick-fil-A and Joe’s Crab Shack were among the businesses which provided gift cards for participants, he said.
“It’s going to be a very fun event,” Griffin said.
No electricity or water are provided, and only public bathrooms are available, he noted.
Setup will be Saturday after 1 p.m. Check out will be Sunday by noon.
