Douglas County saw its unemployment rate dip to 8.4 percent in November as 219 more residents found work during the month, the Georgia Department of Labor reported.

The November unemployment rate was a decrease from 8.5 percent in October as the number of employed residents increased from 63,507 to 63,726. The number of unemployed residents dropped by 94 from 5,919 to 5,825, said state labor analyst Corey L. Smith.

However, not all the news was positive for Douglas County, he said.

“Though the unemployment rate improved from October to November, the number of initial claims for jobless benefits grew by 76 over the month,” Smith said.

A total of 657 overall initial claims for unemployment benefits were reported in November compared to 581 in October, Smith said.

Industries which saw decreased jobless filings in November included Health Care and Social Assistance; and Finance and Insurance.

Unemployment filings were up in the Manufacturing; Construction; and Arts, Entertainment and Recreation industries.

November’s unemployment rate was 1.1 percent lower than the November 2011 rate of 9.5 percent. A total of 707 residents filed for initial jobless benefits that month, Smith said.

Among neighboring counties, only Fulton County’s rate was higher than Douglas County’s jobless figure in November. They ranged from Cobb County at 7.3 percent, to Paulding at 7.5, Carroll at 8.4 and Fulton at 8.9 percent.

The statewide jobless rate was 8.3 percent in November. The national rate in November was 7.7 percent.

A separate report on Georgia cities’ unemployment rates in November showed Douglasville at 9.3 percent, up slightly from 9.2 percent in October.

Its November 2011 rate was 11.1 percent.

The highest and lowest city jobless rates in Georgia were in Fulton County. East Point in south Fulton had the highest rate at 12.4 percent. Alpharetta in north Fulton had the lowest rate at 6.0 percent.
