Douglas County unemployment increases for first time in three months

Douglas County saw its May unemployment rate rise to its highest level in three months, the Georgia Department of Labor reported.

The county’s unemployment rate rose from 7.8 percent in April to 8.5 percent in May for county residents 16 years and older — the highest since an 8.8 percent rate in February, labor department analyst Corey Smith said.

The county saw initial claims for jobless benefits increase by 93 from 475 filings in April to 568 filings in May.

Most of the increased number of claims came from former workers in the accommodation and food services, health care and social assistance, and wholesale trade industries, Smith stated.

Though the number of employed increased, it was more than offset by an increase in unemployed residents.

Employment grew by 152 — from 63,238 in April to 63,390 in May. However, the total of Douglas Countians unemployed grew by 491, rising from 5,380 to 5,871.

In May 2012, the unemployment rate in Douglas County was 9.2 percent when 62,206 residents were employed, 6,267 residents were unemployed, and 676 initial claims for jobless benefits filed.

A separate report on Georgia cities showed Douglasville with a 9.7 percent unemployment rate in May, up from 9.3 percent in April. The rate was 10.2 percent in May 2012.

The highest city unemployment rate was reported in East Point in south Fulton County at 12.6 percent, and Statesboro in southeast Georgia at 12.5 percent.

The lowest jobless rate was found in the north Fulton County cities of Alpharetta and Roswell, both at 6.2 percent.

The 28-county metro Atlanta region had an unemployment rate of 8.2 percent in May, up from 7.6 percent in April.

Georgia’s rate of 8.3 percent exceeded the nationwide rate of 7.6 percent in May.
