“I am pleased that both plans offer the addition of sidewalks on both sides of Mount Vernon Road and left turning lanes,” Dunwoody resident Krista Weaver said. “I question the extension of the left turn lane onto Manhasset all the way down to Vernon Oaks Drive as shown in option two and I question whether there are other areas that are in more dire need of attention than an unnecessarily long expensive turn lane for Manhasset.”
Council members Adrian Bonser, Lynn Deutsch, John Heneghan and Doug Thompson said they agreed with approving the additional design costs for sidewalks and bike lanes, but did not agree with adding a third lane that would act as a turn lane for both directions.
“I am of the mindset that if you build it they will come,” Thompson said. “We do have a traffic problem and we need to fix a lot of intersections first with only those that are necessary.”
Capitol Projects Manager Mindy Sanders presented the council with a contract for the Mount Vernon and Vermack roads intersection. Sanders said the city still thinks it is necessary to add the third lane and the additional cost is for the design, not construction. She said if the center turn lane is not included, it will decrease construction costs.
Sanders also asked the council for direction on which design the council wanted to approve. Heneghan and Bonser both said they were not ready to approve a design with a long middle lane.
“You are looking for direction from the council to tell you we don’t want that center turn lane or whatever the direction of council is,” Heneghan said.
Council unanimously approved gives the city an additional $11,000 for a design contract, but did not give direction on which design they would approve.
