As many others are setting New Year’s fitness resolutions, Cassie Harrison is preparing for “The Biggest Loser Challenge” at the Marcus Jewish Community Center in Dunwoody.

Harrison, a preschool teacher at the center, has a goal to lose 30 pounds by the end of the nine-week program, which begins Tuesday. Program participants will attend two workout and educational sessions each week led by the center’s sports performance coordinator and Biggest Loser pro Laura Johnson.

“I’m looking forward to getting stronger physically and stronger mentally,” Harrison said.

Prior to signing up for the program, she kick-started her own weight loss plan last summer and lost 70 pounds.

“Honestly, I just changed my eating habits pretty drastically,” she explained. “Before, I was eating a lot of processed foods. My husband and I ate fast food quite often. I changed to whole foods and eating a lot of natural products versus anything processed and I watched my sugar intake. And then I just worked out three or four times a week lightly — swimming or doing some light cardio.”

Harrison said her weight loss was spurred from following a fitness trainer’s tip shared on the NBC television show “The Biggest Loser” in early June.

“The trainer tip was to cut out sugar for seven days and that’s what will give you the control to stay away from sugar and have more control over your diet,” she explained.

Harrison hopes to lose another 100 pounds in addition to her earlier weight loss.

“I’m expecting to get really strong and be able to push myself further and then I want to sign up for a 5K,” she said.

She said she wants to participate in the center’s Harris Jacobs Dream Run in May.

If Harrison is named the “biggest loser” at the end of the nine-week weight loss challenge, she will have something else to look forward to as well. The participant who has the highest percentage of pounds lost will receive a two-night stay at The King and Prince Resort on St. Simons Island. The grand prize includes an ocean-front room, breakfast for two and two rounds of golf.
