The East Paulding cross country team is young and recovering from injuries in hopes of finishing the season strong.

It also is working under the direction of new head coaches this year after former head coach Alan Daws made a “big move” to assistant principal and was unable to dedicate the time needed to the team. Jacob Tumlin and Becky Dunn were promoted to head coaches of the boys and girls’ squads, respectively.

“Jacob and I have worked side by side the last five years and he has been the co-head coach for that time,” Daws said.

Dunn served as an assistant coach specializing in distance events for the track team last season, Daws said.

Various members of the team have been sidelined with injuries to everything from ankles and feet to knees, Dunn said.

As of last week, the team had competed in only two meets, Berry College Clara Bowl on Aug. 31 and Run at the Rock at Woodland High School in Cartersville on Sept. 7.

“Our latest meet was our first race of the season where our entire team raced the same course, so it was very exciting to be able to see how everyone performed.

“Sheffield, won her race with a time of 20:51 and our second place girl was in the top 20 overall. Our varsity boys came in third place overall and were led by Christian Nix and Trevor Robinson, coming in fourth and fifth place overall, respectively,” Dunn said.

With these two meets under their belts, on the boys’ side, the fastest three are junior Nix, freshman Robinson and sophomore Dillon Curtis.

For the girls, Dunn said the fastest runners are junior Allyssa Sheffield, Jasmine Weber, Jaymi Wright, and Caroline Basch.

The team’s third meet of the season was scheduled to be the Paulding County Cross Country Championship on Tuesday at White Oak Park in Dallas.

Prior to the race Dunn said, “I am super excited to see how we match up against the other schools in the county and am anxious to see how everyone races. I am hoping that everyone who has been injured is able to race and walk away with no injuries.”
