City of East Point Police Chief Woodrow Blue has resigned after two-and-a-half years of service. Blue’s resignation was both tendered and effective today.

No reason was given in a statement from the city.

In the statement, Mayor Jannquell Peters expressed appreciation for the service Blue rendered during his time with East Point. “We are grateful for the efforts Chief Blue put forth in heading the Police Department, and we wish him future success,” she said. “I want to assure our residents that public safety is a top priority and concern of the city, and that this transition will not affect that priority.”

Until a permanent replacement is found, Maj. Tommy Gardner, a 26-year veteran of the East Point Police Department, has been named as the interim police chief. In his previous position, Gardner served as a major over East Point’s criminal investigation division. He is a 2011 FBI National Academy graduate and a 2012 graduate of the Georgia Association of Chiefs of Police School.

The city plans to move forward quickly in conducting a nationwide, full-scale search, engaging the assistance of a national search firm.

“The intent is to find an individual who is the best possible fit for the position and the city of East Point,” Peters said.

According to Interim City Manager Ellis Mitchell, “The ideal candidate would possess not only strong administration and leadership skills, but also have a proven track record of, and commitment to community policing, as well as the use of technology in crime prevention.”
