The U.S. Department of Education said Emory University is being investigated for the way it responds to complaints of sexual violence and harassment.

The department’s Office for Civil Rights named Emory as one of 55 colleges nationwide that is being probed for Title IX compliance and enforcement.

In a statement, Emory officials said the department is also reviewing the school’s sexual assault prevention, outreach, support and education programs. Emory spokeswoman Beverly Cox Clark said the school works to build a safe community and takes all complaints and accusations of sexual misconduct seriously.

The Department of Education’s Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights Catherine Lhamon said federal officials hope that publishing the list of schools under investigation will prompt community discussions on the issue.
