Douglas County football players have been working out three days a week since June 10 and head coach Jason Respert said he is excited to begin his second season with the Tigers.

“We’re excited. The guys have really bought into the summer program. We look forward to our schedule and look forward to playing some really good teams,” he said.

Finishing the 2012 season with a 2-8 record, Respert said the team has done a great job of showing up for workouts and working hard.

To improve on last year’s record, Respert said the team is working on both physical and mental strength.

“We’ve been emphasizing getting stronger and getting the mentality it takes to get stronger. It takes time and it’s a process to prepare for the games we play. You have to have the mindset to deal with the good and the bad. I feel we’ve progressed a lot in that area,” Respert said.

Douglas County will have roughly nine returning starters this season.

On July 29 the team hosted its Big Cat competition for the second year. This event was used to determine the team’s strongest player – this season, running back Travis Beaird.

Now that the team knows where its strength lies, the Tigers are ready to hit the field and get the season started.
