On Oct. 15 at Luella High School, Eagle’s Landing freshman Betty Jackson finished first in the Henry County cross country championships with a time of 20:48.

“She is pretty good,” Eagle’s Landing cross country coach Claud Spinks said. “One of the better runners in 4A. She ran a really good, smart race at county.”

“I worked really hard and went out there and did my best,” said Jackson, who has been running in distance races since the third grade. “My dad and coach Spinks prepared me for it.”

Better yet, the 5K race at Luella was an overall success for the Lady Eagles since they finished first as well with a combined time of 1:52.10.

Now, Jackson and the rest of the cross country team are preparing for the region race at the Rock Ranch on Halloween in Yatesville.

“I just want to get under 20 minutes and do my best out there,” said Jackson, who posted her fastest time (20:24) earlier this season at the Rock Ranch.

“She is super, super competitive,” Spinks said. “Put her on the track and she is going to compete--no question about it.”

Jackson also runs for the Eagle’s Landing Athletic Club, which is her parents’ AAU team. She also plans to compete in the 400 and 800-meter races, and 4-by-400 meter relay for the track team this spring.
