While many athletes were recognized for their decisions to play football on a national level on Feb. 6 (National Signing Day), Woodward’s Blake Johnson also confirmed where she will play soccer or futbol — an international game — next year.

The 6-foot-1 defender signed her Letter of Intent with Syracuse, where she will also pursue a degree in journalism and broadcasting.

“The connection I had with the coach and the team sealed it for me,” Johnson said. “I felt like everyone was funny and I would fit in really well with them.”

“Blake has not peaked as a soccer player,” Woodward girls’ coach Tonia Webb said. “I think the thing she will most enjoy in college is becoming even better and the challenge of changing roles and positions.”

Last season, Johnson helped the Lady War Eagles reach the Class AAA state quarterfinals.

“Blake has had a huge impact on our team over the last three years,” Webb said. “She brings an intimidation factor to her opponents with her size, but she plays with finesse and is extremely smart about her distribution from her defensive position.”

Johnson, who has a 3.5 GPA, hopes to cap her career at Woodward with a state title this spring.
