In the latter part of the 2011 campaign, Benson started making the transition from setter to outside hitter, which has led to benefits the entire team is enjoying.
“I like being an outside hitter better,” Benson said. “It’s fun. It brings a lot of energy to the game and excitement.”
“She has turned into something special,” Jonesboro volleyball coach Dan Maehlman said. “When we had Kayla [Dowdell] and those girls here she was setting for them. Now this year, she has moved to outside hitter which also shows that she is so athletic and can pretty much play anywhere.”
Because of Benson’s ability to hit the ball where opponents can’t return it, the Lady Cardinals won their first nine games of the season and are currently 15-5.
“She is our go-to person this year,” Maehlman said. “When we need a point we’re going to her—whether it be in the front row or in the back row.”
Benson, who also plays basketball, has a 3.4 GPA and an interest in sports medicine.
