Softball may have been a tough experience at Banneker for senior Courte’nay Brooks but her future on the field appears to be full of success.

“Playing for Banneker has made me mentally tough,” Brooks said. “But I’m better and stronger because of the experience.”

Next year while majoring in both communications and criminal justice, Brooks will play softball for Mississippi Valley State.

“They were a winning program and have won nine [conference] championships in past 11 years,” Brooks said. “The coaches are great and the girls I’m coming in with are great.”

Also a member of the Lady Steelers travel team, Brooks will just concentrate on the position of catcher for her new team.

“I love catching because I feel so empowered behind the plate,” Brooks said. “I’m commanding the field, calling the shots.

“Every batter is a challenge,” she said. “I have to think what their weaknesses are and what are their strengths? How can I get them back to the bench as quick as possible?”

In the classroom, Brooks has taken even more of a leadership role, earning a 4.7 grade-point average and the right to be called Valedictorian.

She is also a recipient of the Gates Millennium Scholarship.
