Basketball is my heart,” said Degrate, who plays first base. “Softball is fun. It’s a competitive sport. You can hype your team up. It’s fun to see your teammates and coaches get happy over a win.”
Despite a season-ending loss to Chamblee on Oct. 7, Degrate and the Lady Trojans still finished 2013 with a 4-1 record in sub-region 6B-AAAA.
“We stayed focused in practice and were mentally prepared before the game and got the job done,” Degrate said. “We stayed together as a team and kept our pitcher and everybody else up so we could go home with the win.”
“There are truly no softball athletes at Banneker but these girls put the time in and became softball players which is pretty good,” Banneker softball coach Eon Drew said.
Degrate hit two home runs this season.
“I’m very calm at the plate,” she said. “I take all the aggression and anger I have out on the ball.”
As far as basketball, Degrate plays both guard positions and is already running up the steps at the football stadium to prepare.
She has a 3.5 grade-point average, an interest in computers and wants to play basketball in college.
