Paideia senior Nia Smith is one of the few athletes good enough to play basketball and bowl at the college level.

“I was actually trying to decide whether or not to bowl in college or play basketball,” Smith said. “I used to be No. 1 in Georgia in my division until I broke my thumb. I was nationally ranked for a little while.”

But with basketball going well, Smith, who said her high score in bowling is 289, decided to continue competing on the hardwood and will attend Berry College next year.

Before Paideia’s playoff game against ELCA on Monday, the 5-foot-6 Smith was averaging nearly 15 points, seven rebounds and almost three steals for the Lady Pythons.

“Nia is a matchup problem for just about everybody we play because she can jump out of the gym despite her height and she is extremely strong,” Paideia girls’ coach Paul Meiere said. “People look at her on the block and think this is going to be easy pickings but she is so quick.”

Earlier this season, Smith also eclipsed the 1,000-point scoring mark.

“I had no idea I was even close to it,” Smith said. “I couldn’t have done it without my teammates so I thank them for it.”

A huge fan of WNBA player Elena Delle Donne, Smith has a 3.7 GPA and plans to major in psychology.
