Junior forward Terrianna Cave fulfilled that scoring desire in the second quarter, netting 14 of her 16 points as Stephenson rallied for a 73-53 victory in the Morrow Thanksgiving Tournament.
As a result of the Lady Jaguars’ full-court trap and her efforts on the offensive glass, Cave converted a bevy of layups, including two three-point plays, to turn an eight-point, first-quarter deficit into a 35-28 halftime advantage.
“She took us on her back and that is what she is supposed to do,” Stephenson coach Dennis Watkins said. “She picked it up when we were down.”
“I would just go to the open spots and my teammates did a good job of looking for me,” Cave said. “I’m really proud of how we persevered through that horrible first quarter.”
After halftime, Stephenson extended its margin to 15 at the end of the third quarter and cruised from thereon.
“I’m just proud of my teammates for keeping their heads up high and going back to what we do best and that is pressure defense,” Cave said.
As far as games on the rest of the schedule, Cave really has her eyes on two contests.
“Last year, Southwest DeKalb beat us in the playoffs so I really want to play them and Tucker swept us last year,” Cave said.
