Coffman, 26, of Leland, N.C., was admitted to the Shepherd Center, a Buckhead hospital for patients with catastrophic head, neck and spinal-cord injuries, in May and is expected to stay for at least two more months.
She said she had a rough day July 24.
“I’m wearing a halo and I was supposed to get my halo off but because of some labs, it was not able to come off,” she said. “I’ve had it on for three months and I was looking forward to getting it off, then I got the bad news it wasn’t coming off.”
That same day, Sherry Moon, owner of Buckhead Wright’s Florist, delivered flowers to Shepherd, along with hospital volunteers and a few of her employees.
“We took 153 arrangements down to the Shepherd Spinal Center,” Moon said.
Wright’s is one of six floral businesses in Georgia that participated in Make Me Smiles Week, sponsored by Teleflora, a Los Angeles-based national flower wire service.
Countrywide, florists used donated flowers from wholesalers and growers to fill Teleflora’s “Be Happy mugs” and deliver them unexpectedly to places like nursing homes and hospitals. This year marked Teleflora’s 12th year of Make Me Smiles Week.
“It’s designed to send flowers to people that don’t normally get flowers and to take flowers in to them just to brighten their day, so to speak, and put a smile on their face,” Moon said.
Moon said more than 500 arrangements were delivered in Georgia last week.
“This was my 10th year. … This is my little way of giving back to the community,” Moon said. “One person that was at the Shepherd Center said they had been there for three weeks and that these were the first flowers they received.”
Moon said each year she chooses a different facility around metro Atlanta to deliver the arrangements to and this is the second time she chose Shepherd.
At about 4 p.m. last Tuesday, Coffman said the yellow, white and lavender daisies in her surprise arrangement brightened her disappointing day.
“I don’t normally get flowers,” she said. “That was rough news for me [last week] and the flowers definitely made my day a lot better.”
