“A track has been something that’s just been discussed for several years,” said Leslie Glass, PTA vice president of community affairs. “We want the track to be built for use of the entire community. That’s our goal.”
If the fundraiser nets $17,000 or more, PTA members hope the track could be ready for use in October. The PTA developed a new afterschool running club this year — in addition to a garden club — and the student runners would be just one group to benefit from a track.
“There’s always limited field space available in Johns Creek,” Glass said.
She anticipates local sports teams and area residents could use the track when school is not in session.
Though the school has held fun run fundraisers in the past, this year the PTA is putting on the event by itself in an effort to avoid the costs of paying an outside company to organize it.
The PTA will host a kickoff celebration during lunch periods Sept. 6 to get students excited about the upcoming event, Glass said. Students participating will have a week and a half to gather sponsorship donations from friends and family.
“Strive for 25” is this year’s theme. For every $25 raised, students will be entered into raffles to win prizes such as a one-hour family Sky Zone pass, dinner and movie passes, and a $100 gift certificate for Stars and Strikes.
“All of our prizes we were able to get donated, and they are family gifts,” she said. “Our grand prize winner overall for the school will [receive] a Georgia Aquarium family membership.”
The classes that raise the most from each grade level will be awarded an extra recess, healthy smoothies and a Spirit Night at Sky Zone.
Glass said the “25” theme also carries out into the running itself as students will be encouraged to run 25 laps of the course in the back of the school.
