The Golden Bears didn’t go down without a fight, however, as they lost to Gordon Lee 33-30 in the Class A finals.
Holy Innocents’ (15-3) dominated its first two matches — defeating Strong Rock Christian 70-6 in the quarterfinals and Mount Zion of Carroll County 49-15 in the semis.
“It was solid, but it was not the goal we wanted,” Holy Innocents’ coach Stacey Davis said. “Going into the tournament, our goal was to win the state title and we didn’t do it.”
Logan Chastain (126), Brendan Quigley (132), Grant Chastain (152), Rod Davis (182/195), Jason Grimes (195/220) and Grant Gosden (220/285) went undefeated in their weight classes for the Bears.
In Class AA, Lovett (21-7) defeated Social Circle 39-27 in the third-place match, avenging a 30-29 loss in the quarterfinals.
The Lions, who finished runner-up in AA last year, recovered quickly from their quarterfinal loss to beat Fitzgerald 36-26 and Monticello 57-9 in the consolation bracket before beating Social Circle again to clinch third place.
“I felt that Saturday went really well,” Lovett coach Billy Maldonado said. “We beat two really good teams [Fitzgerald and Monticello] and then we beat Social Circle. It was the highlight of the tournament for us to beat Social Circle after they beat us earlier in the tournament.”
Kyler Allen and Chase Carter both went undefeated in their matches at 106 pounds, while Spencer Lee (138) and Carson Rich (220) were the other Lion wrestlers to go through the tournament without a loss.
Jefferson won the AA title, defeating Bremen 47-16 in the finals.
Woodward fell short in its bid for the AAA championship as it was edged out by Banks County 34-33 in the title match.
The War Eagles advanced to the AAA finals with a 56-16 victory over Rockmart in the quarterfinals and Oconee County 38-25 in the semis.
Marist defeated Southeast Whitfield 43-30 in the opening round of the AAAA competition, but lost to eventual runner-up Alexander 43-21 in the quarterfinals.
The War Eagles bounced back in the consolation bracket with a 58-18 victory over Lithonia and a 42-24 win over Chestatee before falling short of advancing to the third-place match with a 51-30 loss to Carrollton.
Archer (AAAAAA), Pope (AAAAA) and Gilmer (AAAA) were the other state champions crowned Saturday.
