“We do have some [precincts] on the north end that had some lines, so it’ll take a little while to get them back,” she said.
While voting has steady throughout the day, Shellnutt said, some precincts didn’t get hit hard until the afterwork rush from 5 to 7 p.m.
“Red Oak and Austin Road and those had 100 people in line that didn’t come until very late,” she said.
No technical issues or otherwise cropped up during the day, except for candidate signage, she said.
"We have some people pulling other people's signs," she said. "I think I'm on sign patrol."
As of 1 p.m., Shellnutt said most of the county's 38 precincts were reporting strong numbers.
"At the Lake Dow precinct, as of 1 p.m., they reported 500 voters," she said. "That precinct doesn't have that many voters so that's a pretty good turnout."
The numbers at the Lake Dow precinct represent a similar trend throughout the county; Shellnutt said between 500 to 600 voters have been recorded at some of the precincts, as of 4:50 p.m, including Pates Creek, Locust Grove and Unity Grove.
These precincts, said Shellnutt are known as ones that are more active and often serve as an indicator for the lesser active ones.
Early turnout, according to Shellnutt, was strong from the beginning.
“We’ve already done about 8,000 early voters and 1,000 absentee,” she said.
In 2008 and 2010, Shellnutt said that the total number of voters averaged 19,000 and 22,000 respectively.
“I would love to double that,” she said. “I am hoping we get at least 30,000.”
The two hot races that Shellnutt identified included the Chairman and Board of Commissioners seats. “I’m watching those closely,” she said. “I have a feeling we might enter into a runoff.”
Shellnutt said final results will be posted to the county’s website, www.co.henry.ga.us.
